Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition 2013 - Tuesday, May 28, 2013 - Day 5

3rd Place Winner
"Lowcountry Color" by Daryl Knox

Daryl's artwork is filled with color, depth and an exquisite ambiance. An art teacher once said to me, "Concerning color and value, as long as you have your values correct, you can use any colors and the painting will "read" right." Many people think green for landscape, but look at the color range Daryl uses here - there's a little green, not much but we all know it's a landscape. And what a landscape! Congratulations, Daryl!

Update on the Slasher(s)
Issac Martin with Channel 2, WCBD, arrived at Marion Square early today to interview one of the tent slashing victims. Again, the artists are grateful no art was harmed or stolen! The artists are on high alert and the police are working diligently to identify and apprehend the slasher(s). The publicity from the Channel 2 story may well bring additional leads. So it's probably only a matter of time before the slasher perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

Watercolor Demonstration by Alice Stewart Grimsley

Where else are you going to get fabulous and FREE art lessons but at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition? You can get to the list of demos at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition 2013 Facebook Page (like us!)

Demos for tomorrow:
11:00 a.m. - Joyce Hall - Oil
2:30 p.m. - Rick Reinert - Oil

As artists in a 16-day outdoor exhibition, more or less "living" in the park, we're really fortunate to have such supportive family and friends.  Scott Henderson's family showed up with a picnic lunch yesterday, just in time to hear the concert!

Dualing Art Exhibitions!
Visit Sweet!, a Multimedia Exhibition
Citadel Square, 328 Meeting Street
"Prize" by Amelia Whaley

My art show entitled "The Pomegranate Seals" is part of Sweet! a multimedia exhibition sponsored by the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and presented by Artist on Fire, and literally right across the street from my Booth #67 at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition.  Hope you'll come and visit both shows!

The show has gotten some good buzz around town - the Opening Reception was extremely well-attended, and the food, catered by Sugar & Spice, was enchanting and delicious! What can be better than good art, good food and good friends?  That's what the show Sweet! is all about - the good life! Below are pictures of the youngest artists from Opening Night:

Elianna Radin, Age 8

Ellie's exhibit is filled with imaginative and colorful birds. Without a doubt each of her birds has its own unique personality! Above Ellie is "BuFev" (she gives them interesting names, too).  The red dot means it belongs to me and Ellie told me BuFev is a songbird with its own melody (which Ellie kindly "trilled" to me at the reception..).

Neriya Radin, Age 5

Here you see Neriya and her masterpiece, "Yum! Yum!" That's some kind of 12-foot Yum, Yum indeed! (And even sweeter, Yum! Yum! sold opening night!) Each artist in this show has their own video on the show's website where the artist talks about their exhibition, process, etc. (Each artist's bio on the wall also has a QR Reader where you can access their video on your iPhone while viewing the artwork.)  I venture to say that the videos of Ellie and Neriya really "take the cake"!

Artist's Cousins Turn Out for Sweet Stuff
Pie and Mary Mikell

My cousins, Pie and Mary Mikell, made opening night, and I was thrilled to see them!  Our families go way back to the first English settlers of Edisto Island, where we grew up. In my Artist Statement for "The Pomegranate Seals" I speak of my inspiration for this show - a memory of when Pie and I were 8 years old and at her house on Edisto.  We were out in the yard and she showed me the pomegranate tree (I still can't get over the fact that there was actually a pomegranate tree on Edisto, of all places!) We picked a pomegranate and broke it open right there under the tree and she showed me how to eat it.  The sweet taste of that pomegranate created one of the most unforgettable memories of my life, and many years later, that one memory birthed an art show.
