Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Show - Wednesday, 5/28/08

Pat worked for me again today - she's a very good salesperson! Sorry I missed Linda Plunkett and Rosie Delastatious (friends from Ashley Hall) when they came by. And also Helen Beacham, another artist and friend from Courtyard Art Gallery. When I got to the park this afternoon, Carol Gardner and Christy Crosby were both painting - the first weekend gets very hectic - by this time, we're more in a routine, and the weekdays tend to be like lazy summer painting days in the park.

I closed up in time to get to my church, St. Andrews, Mt. Pleasant, where I normally paint at the Wednesday evening worship service. I am intrigued by archeological remnants and was recently inspired by an ancient processional cross of stone which had been broken but the "intersection" was intact and had been carved with primitive scenes representing the nativity of Christ. I used watercolor and collage on 300 lb. half-sheet Arches cold-pressed watercolor paper. As sometimes happens, the image goes in a different way than the beginning idea. I've still got work to do on it, but I'm pleased with the texture, and I'm beginning to see into the collaged shape what I may want to bring out.

"Cross Remnant"

At home, I turned it sideways - I like it.

"Cross Remnant - Horizontal"

There's definitely something going on close to the center; it appears the textures and paint have brought forward a shape that is asking to be developed. We'll see what happens!
