Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition 2014 - DAY 3

Second Place
"Sidewalk View #1" by John Michiels
Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. with John Michiels

Congratulations to John Michiels for his winning photograph "Sidewalk View #1! This photograph features a house on Wentworth Street and is part of John's "Sidewalk View" series. An interesting side note: John has this painting and the ribbon on the front panel of his booth, and a lady came by and started calling for her children to stop and come back - this was the house she grew up in and has been in the family for 100 years!  It made her day, and John's too.

High Drama in the Park
Violations

Several artists in our area were "ticketed" either in the night or early this morning - ticketed for not using zip ties on their tents at night. If the artist "violators" had already had at least one cup of coffee, they realized it was a prank instigated by an artist in the show, especially since the "perpetrators" all claimed to have used the zip ties.

Steven Jordan was immediately blamed but he has since been exonerated and we will continue to question other usual suspects. However, the Committee is concerned, and rightly so, that these kind of pranks have already begun and it's only Day 3 (because they normally get worse). We tend to expect this after a full week in the hot sun so an occurrence on Day 3 has raised the alarm levels. Be assured that the Committee is on the case and will keep you updated.

Unfortunately, one of the ticketed artists is new and came to me this morning with the ticket and her zip ties she had cut to prove she was unfairly ticketed.  I assured her that she did not owe the $1000 fine, and Captain Brisbane of the Charleston County Police personally spoke to her and assured her this was not a City ticket.  He studied the ticket another artist had received and proclaimed this to be a  prank.

Even More High Drama

Later, however, we had even more high drama on the Calhoun Street side of the show, and there was  even an arrest made. It appears the alleged perpetrator ate lunch at a King Street restaurant and ran away with out paying the bill. A waiter, however, was really alert and saw the customer leave without paying and ran after him - the police had been called and sure enough the he was arrested right in front of Monnie Johnson's booth.

Great Paint-Out Sunday

Fortunately, we as artists know that regardless of weather, high drama and even more high drama, the "show must go on".
