The Day before the day before the day before - Tuesday
How many artists does it take to mark 80+ spaces?
At 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 5/24/16, the PSOAE Committee Members met at Marion Square for the "Great Space Markoff". The good news was sunny weather, no rain in sight. The next good news was that the Spoleto opera, "Porgy and Bess", will be live-streamed into Marion Square Monday night at 7:30 p.m. while the opera is being performed at the Gaillard Auditorium, primarily because there was total angst in the State of South Carolina and beyond since the tickets to all the Porgy and Bess performances were sold out within 3 weeks after the ticket office opened (January/February 2016). The even better news is that admission Monday night at Marion Square is free!
The bad news was that the JUMBOTRON screen and giant sound boxes needed to take up some of the artist spaces. But, as expected, we soldiered on, made certain adjustments and (after several hours) marked off all the spaces.
The Day Before the day before - Wednesday
(Headless) Artist Daryl Knox
Daryl had set up 2 tents by 8:30 a.m., the time I arrived at Marion Square yesterday, Wednesday, 5/25/16, to set up my tent. Daryl is one of the unsung jewels of the PSOAE. Not only can he do anything and everything, he's someone you can count on to help. Additionally, he is an excellent artist!
In Progress
My tent is the one on the far left (before it was raised). Each year it gets more entertaining for everyone but myself because I always forget how to put it together from one year to the next. For instance, I put most of the frame together until it became evident that the corners and center frame were totally wrong. So I had to take it apart and do it over. I've even tried marking the parts but that just confuses me by the next year. Then I put up all 4 sides - inside out until I realized I couldn't zip the corners. I have finally resigned myself to the fact that this is just the way it is. And will be. It's called soldiering on...like
Sara and Alex Radin
Sara and Alex had quite the side business going on yesterday. They were hired to put up 3 tents (all different) and then had to put up their tent. Alex is the artist. His wife, Sara is a dancer, writer, painter and they have 4 children. LITTLE children. Alex and Sara have lots of energy...
My Neighbors
The Engineer and the Architect
Carla's the artist and her husband Dale is on the PSOAE Committee. Carla's a phenomenal artist and they just make a great team. Which is good since they have 5 children (all grown up now).
The Day Before - Thursday
Today was another day at Marion Square from 8:30 to 3:00 p.m. Then back again from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. because I couldn't get all my art in the minivan with my panels.
Today's surprise was the JUMBOTRON needed more room...so you just deal with it and do the best you can. One tent (set up with all the art) had to be moved to the other side of the walkway. What made it more challenging than normal was that the artist was on a plane going to a wedding. Her daughter will open for her tomorrow. But we got her permission and several of the guys in the show picked that tent up and moved it. Then the panels. With the art on it. All very exciting. And nervewracking. It was probably good the artist was on a plane and not on the ground at Marion Square...
Moving the Tent - the Art Panels followed
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
