We are in the historic St. Andrews Mt. Pleasant Church during the Wednesdays in Lent, and "Oil Lamp" was painted behind the altar rail during the worship service. The church is small and exquisite, promoting an atmosphere of intimacy in worship along with the celebration of the Word, prayers, contemporary music and the painting.

This is the type of lamp used in the time of Christ; 7 years ago in Jerusalem, I purchased one for my brother and have used his as the resource material in this painting. The wick was inserted into the small opening at the back of the lamp while the oil was poured into the large round opening.

The olive branch was an afterthought, not just strengthening the design but representing the oil pressed from the olives and used for anointing, healing, light and cooking.
