Merit Award Winner
"Moonrise Over Palmetto Island"
Photography
Scott's award winning photograph is actually behind him, but it is a stunning piece, as is the one to his left. Just come on out to Marion Square to see the one he's standing in front of. We have 84 artists and photographers out here in Marion Square during the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Today the weather is great and it looks like it will hold through the weekend.
THE GREAT PAINT-OUT
Sunday 12:00 noon until...
In addition to the regular demos, most all the artists will be painting at their booth.
Come get your paintings hot off the press (or brush...)!
*************BREAKING NEWS*************
I mentioned in the post for Day 3, Sunday, May 27th, about the buzz in Marion Square regarding the Sunday articles in the Charleston Post and Courier about our art show. Below is the text of the letter to the Editor that the coordinators of this exhibition sent to the paper (ed. note: the street addresses have been removed for this post):
As coordinators for the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit ("PSOAE"), we were appalled to see several direct quotes in the Sunday, May 27th Post and Courier that were not only misleading but simply incorrect.
Coordinator Lesley Johnson was quoted as saying "People decided not to do it (the show) because they upped the price." While this might have been true for some, no artist cited fees as the reason for their exit. As a matter of fact, the increase in fees is designated to help defray the rental cost of the large tent perched under the Calhoun Monument for the enjoyment of everyone.
Daryl Knox, First Place Award winner, was also incorrectly quoted as saying "Right now, if you win an award they invite you back next year, but that could change." An artist's invitation to participate has absolutely no correlation to awards. All awards for each year's PSOAE show begin and end with that show. Moreover, according to Mr. Knox, he actually said "Other shows invite the award winners back the next year, but this show does not. That could change."
While we appreciate coverage by the Post and Courier, we would request that it be as accurate as possible.
Sincerely,
Victoria Platt Ellis
